Regulated Medical Waste Acceptance Policy

Code Red Medical Waste Solutions, Inc. requires compliance with all applicable regulations regarding how it and its Customers interact with Regulated Medical Waste. Federal regulations require that all medical waste generators to certify that all packaging and documentation of transported RMW complies with DOT regulations regarding waste classification, packaging, labeling and shipping documentation. The purpose of this document is to assist the medical waste generator and Code Red with the understanding of regulated medical waste and its identification, classification, segregation and packaging of regulated medical waste. What Is Regulated Medical Waste?

The Department of Environmental Conservation defines regulated medical waste as any “material generated in research, production, and testing of biologicals or health care such as: Infectious animal waste, Human pathological waste, Human blood and blood products, Needles and syringes (sharps), Cultures and stocks (microbiological materials, and other biohazard waste”.

Customer Responsibilities

1. Client shall package all Regulated Medical Waste in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances.

2. Client shall assure Code Red that all containers containing regulated medical waste are properly packaged and labeled in accordance with all federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances.

3. Non-Conforming Waste shall not be mixed with RMW. Non-Conforming Waste is defined as any waste or other material not falling within the definition of Biomedical Waste and fetal remains and human torsos; radioactive, reactive, corrosive, ignitable or toxic wastes and any and all other hazardous wastes and substances as defined in any applicable federal, state, county and municipal laws, regulations and guidelines; pharmaceutical material to the extent that Code Red and Customer have a specific Agreement for this type of waste and the pharmaceuticals are packaged according to instructions provided; RCRA characteristic chemotherapy waste which has an alcohol base that makes the mixture ignitable, such as Vepesid; and Chlorambucil, Cyclophosphamide, Duanomycin, Melphalan, Mitomycin C, Streptozotocin, and Uracil Mustard. Non-Conformming Waste shall also include improperly classified and/or improperly packaged Biomedical Waste and any waste identified as unacceptable under Code Red Waste Acceptance Policy in effect during the term of the Agreement.

Waste Segregation and Packaging

Please refer to DOT regulation 49 CFR 173.197 for detailed wording on medical waste packaging. All packages of regulated medical waste must be prepared for transport in containers meeting the following requirements: 1. Rigid; 2. Leak resistant; 3. Impervious to moisture; 4. Of sufficient strength to prevent tearing or bursting under normal conditions of use and handling; 5. Sealed to prevent leakage during transport; and 6. Puncture resistant for sharps. All containers containing regulated medical waste for transport must be accompanied by a Manifest as required in 49 CFR 172.202.
